Art Appraisal

Do I need an art appraisal?

Tough question – Do you:

  • want to know how much your art is worth?
  • want to get the artwork insured properly?
  • want to give it away and claim a charitable deduction?
  • want to sell your art?  (most popular – “I got this at a garage sale and I want to know if it will pay for my trip to Hawaii.”   “My grandmother has always had this and I would just like to find out what it’s worth.”)

Art Appraiser

It’s gonna cost at least a couple hundred to get a decent art appraisal from a reputable art appraiser. Think about it, these folks are SMART!!! They have to have a lot of knowledge.

Where can I get an art appraisal?

In Kansas City if you go to the Nelson-Atkin’s website they specifically say that unfortunately their staff does not do art appraisals, but they list the following information:

These national organizations have local art appraisers:

  1. American Society of Appraisers,appraisers.org, 703.478.2228  To find a dealer near you, you have to put in your information.  Boooo!
  2. Appraisers Association of America, appraisersassociation.org, 212.889.5404 Here you can go to the Find An Appraiser page and do a quick search.  I did a search within 100 miles of 66223 and left the “Quick Search by Keyword” blank and come up with 3 AAA (Appraisers Association of America) certified from KC, MO and one from Lawrence.
  3. Art Dealers Association of America, artdealers.org, 212.488.5550
  4. International Society of Appraisers, isa-appraisers.org, 206.241.0359 Very clean and nice website that had the clearest “Find An ISA Appraiser” and produced three qualified local members (Although they were in Liberty, Lone Jack and one in KC,MO) . Again, I left the first keyword box blank and just put in my zip.

  4. American Society of Appraisers Kansas City Chapter lists about 7 individuals without much bio info, but does have contact info and some have a link to their website.

Here’s a great article from our own hometown mag KCHandG explaining the art appraisal process a little more.

I think I am starting to understand why we get this question so much. It takes a little digging to find a good art appraiser that can do an art appraisal. If you have any experience with any of the individuals mentioned in the article or recommend anyone we would love to hear from you.

Oh and let me answer the last question for you, “No, sorry, we are not able to help you sell your found art on eBay.”
