October Arts Events

October Arts Events Friday, October 12 The Drop-In/Pop-Up Waiting Room Project at Spencer Art Museum Shows through October 27th University of Kansas, 1301 Mississippi, Lawrence KS “Waiting is generally a passive experience. We are not in control — we are asked to follow specific formalities and procedures as we agonize over the time spent or wasted. We obsess on whose turn is next. In the medical waiting room this sense of powerlessness can be compounded by anxiety over the implications of examination and treatment. The Drop-In/Pop-Up Waiting Room Project and M-PACT (Medical Policy Access & Care Triage) Interface turns this dynamic upside down. This mobile art project seeks to exchange ideas and explore the complexities, incongruities, and possibilities of public healthcare policies, access, medical research, and public opinion. The core question is, What are you waiting for? Part of the project will be on view at the Spencer Museum of Art at all times. The other part of the project — the pop-up waiting room and interactive station — will visit various locations in the community and region, from bank lobbies and medical facilities to community centers. Anyone who happens on the pop-up waiting room can sit in a chair, listen to stories and interviews, and express his or her thoughts on the state of healthcare in this election year.”   “Ecstasy and Dreams” by Julie Farstad at The Studios Inc Exhibition Space Shows through October 26th 1708 Campbell Street, Kansas City MO “The Studios Inc is pleased to present “Ecstasy and Dreams”, by Julie Farstad, an exhibition that includes new oil and fabric paintings, as well as soft sculpture. Our country is at a crossroads regarding attempts to diminish the right and power of women to control their own bodies and lives. This is our opportunity to respond; to make our voice heard; to have our vision of tomorrow experienced by others. The Response to the War On Women is not necessarily an angry one, nor does it have to be pretty. It is an open response–open to every artist who has something to say about Contemporary Issues or the Life of Women. This important show features area artists responding to issues that affect all our lives today. Juried by Jean Howard. Jean has been a commercial and fine artist for over fifty years.
